Assignments
September's Assignment is " Hands "
The Monthly Assignment
Each month we pick a subject / topic that all members can pursue, based on their interpretation. In the past, assignments have included circles, lines, metal, ice, pairs, and others. The subject matter is intentionally vague: this is gives members the opportunity to creatively interpret & pursue the assignment at their own time and pace. We’re always intrigued by the wide variety of submissions!
Submitting photos
Send your photos by email to kcphotoclub@eastlink.ca by the day prior to the monthly meeting – that will help us to ensure that your photo is included in the preparation for the scoring process. If you have lots of good shots, pick your best 3 to be scored.
One other constraint: submitted photos should be shot in the month of the assignment. After all, the objective is to get you shooting rather than browsing old photos for a good fit.
Scoring
Each month we conduct a scoring process to assess the submissions and pick the top 3 + honorable mentions.
Scoring is done at each meeting by the following method:
- Everyone is issued a score sheet
- Photos are anonymously displayed in 2 passes: a ‘Preview’ pass followed by a ‘Scoring’ pass
- In the Preview pass, each photo is displayed for about 7 seconds: no scoring, just watch, assess & consider critique elements that are printed on the score sheet
- In the Scoring pass, each photo is displayed again for about 7 seconds and the sequence number of each photo is called out
- Each member then scores each photo on their score sheet with a score of 1 – 9, with 9 being the highest score
- After the scoring pass, score sheets are gathered, and the photos are displayed a 3rd time – that’s when submitters can claim & describe their entries, & ask for suggestions and /or critiquing from fellow members
The Results
Here’s the fun part! Scores are tabulated after the meeting, and the top 3 scoring submitters will have their photos posted in the Assignment section of the website. In cases where a submitter places more than once in the top 3, the next best scoring submitter has their photo posted – that way we’ll have photos by 3 different submitters posted as the top 3. Submitters with more than 1 high scoring shot will receive honorable mention for their other photos as well.
A final note: Don’t think for a minute that your photos may not be ‘good enough’. We encourage all members of all levels of expertise to submit assignment shots. After all, sharing photos with your colleagues is one of the best ways to hone your photographic talents!
